Analysis of political rhetoric in the competition for public trust

Philipp Aerni's book chapter contribution to " 'Wir stehen für Euch ein!' Eine Analyse der politischen Rhetorik im Wettbewerb um das öffentliche Vertrauen"

Book chapter description

While in politics the resources 'money' and 'power' are partly tradable and thus enable political barter transactions, this is not possible with the resource 'trust'; because trust is not tradable. This is regrettable, because public trust would actually have an important bridge-building function. This book chapter shows how the privatisation of public trust in politics leads to increasing political polarisation, which makes joint action for more sustainable development more difficult.

Description of the book

We cannot do without trust, neither in our interpersonal relationships nor in social contexts. It is demanded, expected and granted everywhere. At the same time, however, trust can also be disappointed and is thus a risky undertaking that cannot offer any security. Trust therefore remains a risk to which we must expose ourselves again and again, which makes us vulnerable, but to which there is no alternative. In this anthology, which emerged from a lecture series at the University of Applied Sciences St. Gallen, the concept of trust is applied to various thematic areas and questioned with regard to its performance.
