The Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) is a research project initiated in 1997 by the London Business School (UK) and Babson College (USA).  It examines the activities of business development in over 60 countries around the world.  The School of Business Administration Fribourg  (Haute Ecole de Gestion HEG), and in particular, its Entrepreneurship and SME Institute, are responsible for leading the project on Swiss territory.  All former Swiss and international reports can be found on the GEM internet site.

The economic crisis is reflected in the total Swiss entrepreneurial activity. The sixth national report for Switzerland includes, besides chapters such as "A global perspective on entrepreneurship in 2010" and "Entrepreneurship framework conditions", a special chapter called "Entrepreneurship and the financial and economic crisis 2008 - 2010.
