Fil d'Ariane :

Promoting careers for women

Since its foundation, the  School of Business Administration Fribourg (HEG)  has always been committed to promoting careers for women.  If we have seen excellent results at the bachelor level, postgrad courses are still suffering from a lack of female representation. Results are even weak with regard to the teaching body.

  • Bachelor : with more than 40% female students studying at the bachelor level, the HEG Fribourg can very probably boast the highest quota in Switzerland for schools of its type. Good promotion within professional schools and colleges is the main reason. This high number is no doubt the first trump card for promoting careers for women in the economy.

  • Master : launched in the autumn of 2008, with female registrations showing the same strong tendancies as the bachelor.

  • Postgrad courses : the number of female students is low due to the fact that the courses reflect the insufficient number of female managers and supervisors in companies and administrations. There is one delightful exception, however : more than 80% of the participants in the CAS in Communication course are female.

  • Teaching body : female presence among the teaching body is also notably weak.  It is true that there are few job applications stemming from women, although in language teaching this number has risen.

  • Day care facilities : the HEG`s participation in the communal HES-SO-Fribourg day care centre is a great contribution to the promotion of careers for women. The HEG assists master and postgrad students who need to place their children in a day nursery during their courses.

  • Networking : supported by OPET, the Federal Office for Professional Education and Technology, and initiated by the five universities of applied sciences of Western Switzerland, Career Women (www.career-women.ch), is associated with a vast network of associations whose objective is promoting and assisting the realisation of careers for women. There you will find seminars and conferences in technical fields, and possibilities of networking with dynamic associations, meeting professional women, and finding a mentor. An employee exchange facilitates the search for companies open to careers for women.

There is still no doubt much to be done to promote careers for women, but the HES will continue its contributions in the years to come.
